Hi everyone, I’m Steve McCarthy, your Vice President of Student Activities. It’s effectively my job to oversee Horizon Volunteering and Sports & Societies in the Students’ Union and make sure they’re doing the jobs that you, the students, want them to do.
I’ll be responsible for organising events throughout the year, such as One World Week, Raise and Giving (RAG) week and Varsity Day. These are big events to get students more involved in and around the Student’s Union.
I’m one of 5 Sabbatical officers here to represent you and make sure you have a wicked time at Coventry University, inside and outside of lectures.
Horizon Volunteering offer great opportunities for those students who are keen on Volunteering. I’ll be working alongside Corinne Gordon and the rest of the gang to try and help out arrange these for you.
Sports and Societies is one of the biggest areas in the SU. With 98 Sports and Societies and nearly 2500 members, it can be overwhelming. That is why I work alongside Rob Wells and Jo Brophy to help students with any needs relating to Sports and Societies. I also Chair in the BUCS West Midlands which helps our sports teams have their concerns raised on a regional level.
I also arrange One World Week, which is aimed at creating cultural awareness and awareness of global issues that affect us all. It consists of 4 concepts: Art, Forum, Sport and Festival. Plans are for there to be a 5-a-side tournament, food festivals and an International Film Week, to name just a few events.
Varsity Day is where all our sports teams compete against Warwick Uni. It’s the biggest event in our Sporting calendar. Sadly, we haven’t won it for a while, but I can guarantee that will change this year!
