The Students' Union Evaluation Initiative
An Introduction
CUSU is taking part in this project which is part funded by the Dept for Universities, Innovation and Science (DUIS).
The aim of the project is measure how good your students union really is in comparison with other students unions around the country.
The assessment of your union is made by an independent auditor (a bit like OFSTED) who will visit in November.
There are about 20 students’ unions going through this process at the moment and Coventry is in the second group to go through to final assessment.
There are 4 levels of standards from below minimum, minimum standard, acceptable and finally to Fully Achieved standards. To be at level 4 would mean we are a role model for other students unions.
We believe at CUSU that we are at level 3 on the whole, although there are some parts of CUSU where we are at level 4 and some areas where we are below level 3.
Being at level 3 means that we can improve further but that we are not in the main unsatisfactory. However, our independent auditor may not agree with our own assessment.
What are the CUSU Areas that are looked at?
There are four main areas of interest to the assessor and each one of those is broken down further. They are as follows:
Theme A: Participation, Representation and Governance
Theme B: Vision, Objectives and Annual Plans
Theme C: Well Managed, Effective and Political Management
Theme D: Quality, Reputation and Services
Theme E: Communications, Finance, Partnerships
Evidence
When CUSU assesses itself in preparation for the independent auditor we have to provide evidence of our claims on the levels of performance and quality of CUSU.
The amount of evidence is huge and covers every aspect of the students’ union. In fact, if you wanted to know everything your union does then the evidence collected for this assessment would tell you. Literally everything from staff appraisals to executive training, meetings with the City Council to business plans, from monitoring ethnicity to the systems for evoting.
Who is Responsible for this Assessment of the Students Union?
There is a working group of the President, Tom Wood, the Vice President Academic Affairs, Sabiha Teladia, the General Manager and the Membership Services Manager. This group will make reports to the Executive Committee, the Union Council and the membership.
As part of the SUEI project CUSU has completed a series of self assessment statements. These can be read below.
SUEI SELF ASSESSMENT STATEMENTS
They will make regular reports available through the website and the newspaper.
